Coaching Forms and Rules

Below you will find some important resources that will help you coach in our intramural programs. Remember, first and foremost, our intramural program is about creating a fun environment where our players can learn to play and enjoy the game of basketball. For that reason, all of our intramural programs strictly follow equal playing time policies. Information on how to build out equal playing time lineups is also included below.

EQUAL PLAYING TIME RULES

Each coach for every one of our intramural teams is responsible for strictly adhering to the equal playing time rules. Games will be stopped at the halfway point of each quarter to permit substitutions. Players cannot be removed during their assigned shifts in the game because of foul trouble. The only substitutions permitted (except for injury) are during the stoppages at the halfway point of each quarter. Since each quarter consists of two different parts, there ends up being 40 playing slots (or shifts) to assign per game.

The below chart is useful for figuring out how many shifts each player must play in each game depending on the amount of players that you have for a given game.

Each player plays 4 times.

4 players play 4 times, 5 players play 5 times.

5 players play 6 times, 2 players play 5 times.

4 players play 7 times, 2 players play 6 times.

If a player is sick or injured during one of their shifts, or fouls out, the coach is permitted a free substitution for the remainder of that shift. After that shift is over, the remainder of the game is still subject to the equal playing time rules.

If a player arrives late or must leave early, they must participate proportionally for the time they are present.

Coaches must keep an equal playing time chart tracking the playing time (either in the form of the worksheets provided above or one of their own choosing) that must be presented to a Council Rock Basketball official upon request.

At the end of regulation, the equal playing time rules will be deemed satisfied, provided that the coach followed the rules in regulation. If the game is tied at the end of regulation, if time permits, teams may play one 3-minute overtime period. For that period, a coach may pick any 5 players to play in that overtime period. In a playoff game, successive 3-minute overtime periods will be played until there is a winner. Equal playing time rules will apply to the successive overtime periods, and players on the bench for the initial period must play in the next period.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

In the event that the equal playing time rules are not followed as determined by the Council Rock Basketball Association Board, the offending team will forfeit the game. This rule also applies to playoff games. Coaches who violate these rules are also subject to additional penalties as determined by Council Rock Basketball Association Board and/or President. Those penalties will be up to and including suspension or permanent exclusion from the program.
